Description
Commissioned by the client, Atelier Tao+c redesigned and regenerated this 232sqm old building by inserting a capsule hotel that can accommodate 20 people, a community bookstore, and a library into the 7.2-meter high two-story space. The staggering platforms are intertwined with multiple layers of visual connections, sounds, and eye contacts through the two masses, creating a space of floating senses. The project presents a sensitive adaptive reuse project that transforms a traditional mud-walled house into a hybrid cultural space.
Highlights
A standout feature of the project is the use of locally sourced bamboo for the extensive bookshelves that envelop the capsule rooms. These bamboo planks not only provide structural support and privacy but also emit a fresh, organic aroma. The scent of bamboo permeates the space, intertwining with the smell of books to create a unique olfactory experience .
The deliberate choice of bamboo serves multiple purposes: it supports local craftsmanship, reinforces the building’s connection to its natural surroundings, and enhances the sensory experience of the occupants. The architects note that “what you smell and see in this space are intertwined together to produce an intriguing journey of senses”.
Scent characteristics
The interior atmosphere is characterized by the fresh scent of bamboo, the earthy aroma of the original mud walls, and the subtle fragrance of books. This combination creates a calming and immersive environment that engages visitors on multiple sensory levels.
