TREND & VALUE
Using scents in the built environment for storytelling, enhanced experiences, managing stress and anxiety has gain popularity in the past decades. Interventions from artists, architects, interior and landscape designers use various tools mediate the olfactory experiences in different spaces. This collection include three ways of interventions based on means: interventions using materials, interventions through landscaping and plants, interventions with technologies. In all these interventions, spatial layout and ventilation are critical to the delivery of the scent for desired experiences. Unlike olfactory art relying on perfumery processes, these intervention are embedded in the spatial design and organisation context. However, it is important to stress that a smellscape approach is an integrative strategy which does not replace the fundamental requirement to ensure indoor air contaminants remain below harmful concentrations.
